Ajai Shankar, former industry secretary, has an excellent suggestion for self-targeting in food — mix wheat flour (atta) with soya flour, raising its protein content but making it less palatable. Richer folk will not eat this, but poor people will. Such protein fortification of atta could help reduce protein deficiency in pregnant women and children.
Rationing foreign workers - Indian style
Posted by balaji 18 days ago (http://www.livemint.com)
The new policy’s use of company size as the key variable for calculating immigration eligibility is random. Why 20? Why 1%? Why create discrimination with a higher minimum wage of $25,000 for foreigners? Why the bias against labour-intensive sectors? Why exempt IT and ITeS businesses from the cap?
Swaminomics: At today's costs, Solar power is economic suicide
Posted by balaji 27 days ago (http://swaminomics.org)
Solar power today costs Rs 9 to Rs 10 per unit in roof-top photovoltaic panels and other applications. The National Solar Mission has set a target of 20,000 MW of solar electricity by 2020. This may be desirable, but at today’s solar technology costs, it will be economic suicide.
Has GST been derailed again?
Posted by balaji 31 days ago (http://www.livemint.com)
The roll-out of the goods and services tax (GST) seems headed for another delay as state governments said on Wednesday that the constitutional changes recommended by the finance ministry to facilitate the introduction of the levy were lopsided and unfair to states.
Microfinance — the banks of the future? « Swaminomics

NGOs fear that the social ethos of MFIs is losing out to commercial orientation. Maybe, but the traditional NGO approach created only small boutiques of rural credit, whereas rural India needs giant networks. Giant networks require massive capital, which can be attracted only by for-profit corporations.
Sauvik Chakraverti: On David Cameron's India Visit
Posted by balaji 34 days ago (http://sauvik-antidote.blogspot.com)
My intention in this post has been to show the great error of entrusting the personnel of this socialist State in New Delhi, all of whom love to sit on files and delay progress, with decision-making powers that affect businesses. Public opinion must demand that they get out of the way. Laissez faire, laissez passer, laissez aller. Liberty!
Sauvik Chakraverti: Ground Zero - Taxes

If people pay hugely for petrol, they do not have much left over for other things. All the other players in the market lose. Demand, the driving force, goes down. This is another implication of Jean-Baptiste Say's "Law of Markets".
GST, a step closer to realization

GST is an attempt to transform India’s indirect tax system by dismantling fiscal barriers between states and creating a common market. It is expected to lower operating costs for businesses and lower prices for consumers.
Swaminomics: Why grain traders will love Sonia
Posted by balaji 50 days ago (http://blogs.timesofindia.indiatimes.com)
Indira did not realize that if the government decreed a grain monopoly, nothing legal would be left for the open market, and so open market prices would shoot up. When that duly happened, she blamed the traders!
Gujarat levies 25% VAT on petrol and 24% on diesel
Posted by balaji 51 days ago (http://economictimes.indiatimes.com)
The Delhi government on Friday decided to roll back an increase in sales tax on diesel it had announced in the state budget, a move that could force other states to cut local levies on the auto fuel. Diesel in Delhi will be cheaper by Rs 2.70 a litre from Tuesday after the state government reduced value-added tax (VAT) from 20% to 12.5%.
Welfare State: Chhattisgarh’s Food Revolution
Posted by balaji 56 days ago (http://www.livemint.com)
Widespread corruption and 23 million fake ration cards cripple India’s oldest, costliest— and most corruption-ridden—welfare scheme. One of the nation’s poorest states shows how political will and hard work can transform the public distribution system.
Atanu Dey: Why Socialism Fails: A Parable

Indians need to understand why socialism fails. That is a necessary, although not sufficient, condition for India to get out of poverty.
ET-Editorial: Welcome FDI in retail
Posted by balaji 60 days ago (http://economictimes.indiatimes.com)
India needs organised retail, as it urbanises and prospers. And retail will get organised, just as surely as motorised transport replaces haulage by animal power in a modernising economy.
Why PDS scores over Direct cash transfer (DCT)?
Posted by balaji 77 days ago (http://www.governancenow.com)
Now that the idea of replacing the public distribution system (PDS) with direct cash transfers (DCT) – in which the beneficiaries get the subsidy amount directly in their bank accounts – is gaining ground with the Delhi government poised to adopt it shortly and Bihar asking the centre to follow suit, it is time to take a good look at it.
